A purchase order arrives from a Texas manufacturing plant. The specification calls for an Industrial Air Conditioner rated at 460V, 60Hz, three-phase. The factory's standard production line is built for 380V, 50Hz. The sales team confirms the order. The engineering team now has to answer a fundamental question: which components must be changed, and which can remain the same? The answer is not simply a matter of swapping a transformer. Voltage and frequency affect the compressor motor, the fan motors, the control circuit, the protection settings, and the certification markings. This guide walks through the component-by-component review that our factory performs for every 460V/60Hz export order.
The most common misconception is that a voltage change only requires a new transformer. In reality, the frequency change from 50Hz to 60Hz affects the speed of all AC motors. A 50Hz motor running at 60Hz will run 20 percent faster. The compressor, which is a positive displacement machine, will deliver 20 percent more refrigerant flow. This increases the cooling capacity by approximately 20 percent, but it also increases the power draw by 15 to 25 percent. If the compressor motor is not designed for the higher speed, it will overheat and fail. The fan motors will also run faster, which increases airflow and noise. The table below summarizes the effects of a 50Hz to 60Hz change on key components.
| Component | Effect of 50Hz to 60Hz change | Effect of 380V to 460V change | Required action |
| Compressor motor | Speed increases 20%, capacity +20%, power +15-25% | Voltage increase requires re-insulation or new motor | Replace compressor with 60Hz rated unit |
| Condenser fan motor | Speed +20%, airflow +20%, noise +3-5 dB | Voltage increase requires new winding | Replace with 460V/60Hz motor |
| Evaporator fan motor | Speed +20%, airflow +20% | Voltage increase requires new winding | Replace with 460V/60Hz motor |
| Control transformer | Frequency affects core loss slightly | Primary voltage must change | Replace with 460V primary, 24V secondary |
| Contactors and relays | Coil frequency not critical | Coil voltage must match | Replace coils with 460V rated |
| Overload protection | Current settings must be adjusted | Voltage affects current | Re-calibrate to new FLA |
In our factory, we maintain a database of 60Hz rated components for all of our Industrial Air Conditioner models. When an export order is received, the engineering team selects the correct compressor, fan motors, and control components from this database. The unit is then assembled on the same chassis as the 50Hz version, but with the 60Hz component set. Ningbo Hicon Industry Co., Ltd. has completed over 200 export projects for North American customers, and the 460V/60Hz configuration is the most common.
The component changes fall into four categories: the compressor, the fan motors, the control circuit, and the protection settings. The compressor is the most critical. We use a 60Hz rated compressor from a manufacturer that provides performance data at 460V/60Hz. The fan motors are replaced with 460V/60Hz rated motors. The control transformer is replaced with a 460V primary, 24V secondary unit. The contactors and relays are replaced with 460V coils. The overload relays are calibrated to the new full load amperage (FLA). The table below shows a typical bill of changes for a 30-ton Industrial Air Conditioner.
| Component | Standard 380V/50Hz | Custom 460V/60Hz |
| Compressor | 380V/50Hz, 30 ton | 460V/60Hz, 30 ton (same frame) |
| Condenser fan motor | 380V/50Hz, 1.5 kW | 460V/60Hz, 1.5 kW |
| Evaporator fan motor | 380V/50Hz, 2.2 kW | 460V/60Hz, 2.2 kW |
| Control transformer | 380V/24V, 500 VA | 460V/24V, 500 VA |
| Main contactor | 380V coil, 60A | 460V coil, 60A |
| Overload relay | Set to 45A | Set to 38A (adjusted for higher voltage) |
| Power wiring | Based on 45A | Based on 38A (smaller cross-section) |
The overload relay setting is a critical detail. At 460V, the current for the same power is lower than at 380V. If the overload is not re-calibrated, the compressor may run at a higher current than necessary, which reduces efficiency and increases heat. Our factory performs a full load test on every 460V/60Hz unit before shipment to verify that the current draw is within the nameplate FLA.
For export to the United States and Canada, the Industrial Air Conditioner must comply with UL 1995 or CSA C22.2 No. 236. The unit must be listed by a recognized testing laboratory. The listing mark must appear on the nameplate. The nameplate must also show the rated voltage, frequency, phase, and full load amperage. The wiring diagram must be updated to reflect the 460V/60Hz configuration. The table below shows the documentation that we provide with every 460V/60Hz export unit.
| Document | Purpose | Standard reference |
| UL/CSA listing certificate | Confirms compliance with North American safety standards | UL 1995 / CSA C22.2 No. 236 |
| Nameplate drawing | Shows voltage, frequency, FLA, and listing mark | Customer specification |
| Wiring diagram | Reflects 460V/60Hz control circuit | NFPA 70 (NEC) |
| Full load test report | Verifies current draw and cooling capacity | Factory standard |
| Installation manual | Provides site requirements for 460V/60Hz power | Customer specification |
Ningbo Hicon Industry Co., Ltd. works with UL and CSA approved testing agencies to obtain the listing for each custom configuration. We also provide a pre-shipment inspection report that includes the nameplate data and the test results. This documentation is required by the electrical inspector at the installation site.
The lead time for a customized 460V/60Hz Industrial Air Conditioner is typically 6 to 8 weeks, compared to 4 to 5 weeks for a standard 380V/50Hz unit. The additional time is required for component procurement, assembly, testing, and documentation. The cost premium is 8 to 15 percent, depending on the capacity and the number of custom components. The table below shows the lead time and cost impact for different capacity ranges.
| Capacity range | Standard lead time (380V/50Hz) | Custom lead time (460V/60Hz) | Cost premium |
| 10 – 20 tons | 4 weeks | 6 weeks | 8 – 10% |
| 20 – 40 tons | 5 weeks | 7 weeks | 10 – 12% |
| 40 – 60 tons | 6 weeks | 8 weeks | 12 – 15% |
| > 60 tons | 8 weeks | 10 – 12 weeks | 15 – 18% |
Export planning tip: Place the order at least 10 weeks before the required on-site delivery date to allow for production, testing, and ocean freight. The documentation and certification process can add 1 to 2 weeks if the configuration is new to the testing agency.
Customizing an Industrial Air Conditioner for 460V/60Hz export requires a component-by-component review. The compressor, fan motors, control transformer, contactors, and overload relays must all be selected for the new voltage and frequency. The unit must be tested and listed to UL or CSA standards. The lead time is 6 to 8 weeks, and the cost premium is 8 to 15 percent. With proper planning, the customized unit will deliver reliable performance and pass the electrical inspection at the installation site. Ningbo Hicon Industry Co., Ltd. has been manufacturing custom Industrial Air Conditioner units for export for over 15 years and provides full documentation and certification support.
