How Do Modified PTFE Sheets Compare With Virgin PTFE in Wear Resistance?

2026-10-26

A maintenance engineer replaces a worn sealing ring on a hydraulic press. The original part was made from virgin PTFE and lasted nine months. The replacement, sourced from a different supplier, is also labeled PTFE. It fails in eleven weeks, with visible cold flow and deep wear grooves on the sealing face. The engineer sends both parts to our factory for analysis. The original part was virgin PTFE. The replacement was also virgin PTFE. Neither was a Modified PTFE Sheets grade. The application required a filled compound, not a pure resin. This is the most common misunderstanding in PTFE seal selection: the material name is the same, but the wear behavior is not. Modified PTFE Sheets use fillers to change the wear mechanism. Virgin PTFE relies on its low friction coefficient alone. Under load, that is not enough. This guide explains the difference in wear resistance and how to match the material to the application.

1. Why Does Virgin PTFE Wear Faster Under Load?

Virgin PTFE has a friction coefficient of 0.04 to 0.10, which is among the lowest of any solid material. This is why it is used in seals, bearings, and sliding surfaces. But low friction does not mean high wear resistance. Under load, virgin PTFE exhibits cold flow. The polymer chains slide past each other, and the material deforms permanently. The wear rate increases sharply as the pressure-velocity (PV) product rises. At a PV of 0.5 MPa·m/s, the wear rate is manageable. At a PV of 2.0 MPa·m/s, the wear rate increases by a factor of five to ten. The table below compares the key mechanical and wear parameters of virgin PTFE and a typical Modified PTFE Sheets grade.

Parameter Virgin PTFE Modified PTFE Sheets (25% glass fiber + 5% graphite)
Tensile strength (MPa) 25 – 30 18 – 22
Elongation at break (%) 300 – 400 200 – 250
Friction coefficient (dry vs. steel) 0.04 – 0.10 0.12 – 0.18
Wear rate (mg/1000 cycles, PV 2.0) 80 – 120 8 – 15
Limiting PV (MPa·m/s) 0.5 – 0.8 3.0 – 4.0
Coefficient of thermal expansion (10⁻⁵/°C) 12 – 14 8 – 10

The data shows the trade-off. The modified grade has lower tensile strength and higher friction, but its wear rate is six to ten times lower at high PV. The limiting PV is four to five times higher. In our factory, we test every batch of Modified PTFE Sheets on a pin-on-disc wear rig at three PV levels. The wear rate data is included in the batch certificate. Ningbo Taifno PTFE Plastic Products Co., Ltd. has been manufacturing PTFE sheets for over 12 years.

2. How Do Different Fillers Change the Wear Mechanism?

The filler system determines how the Modified PTFE Sheets behaves under load. Glass fiber increases compressive strength and reduces cold flow. Carbon fiber improves thermal conductivity, which dissipates frictional heat and prevents localized melting. Bronze powder provides high load capacity and dimensional stability. Graphite and molybdenum disulfide act as solid lubricants, reducing the friction coefficient and preventing transfer film buildup on the counterface. The table below shows the common filler systems and their application ranges.

Filler system Typical content Wear improvement direction Suitable PV range (MPa·m/s) Application note
Glass fiber 15 – 25% Compressive strength, creep resistance 1.0 – 2.5 Abrasive to soft counterfaces
Carbon fiber 10 – 20% Thermal conductivity, load capacity 1.5 – 3.5 Good for high-speed sliding
Bronze powder 40 – 60% Dimensional stability, high load 2.0 – 4.0 Not for corrosive media
Graphite 5 – 15% Self-lubrication, transfer film control 0.5 – 2.0 Good in dry running
MoS₂ 5 – 10% Friction reduction, startup torque 0.5 – 2.0 Best in vacuum or inert gas

Seal designer's note: The filler must match the counterface material. Glass fiber is effective against hard steel, but it can wear away a soft aluminum or brass counterface. Bronze-filled grades are excellent for high-load hydraulic applications, but they corrode in acidic or alkaline media. Graphite is a good general-purpose filler for dry running, but it is not suitable for oxidizing environments. In our factory, we recommend a filler system based on the counterface hardness, the medium, and the PV level. We provide a material selection guide with each order.

3. What Wear Data Should Be Verified Before Selecting a Sheet?

A wear rate number without test conditions is meaningless. Before selecting a Modified PTFE Sheets grade, the designer should verify four things. The first is the PV level at which the wear rate was measured. A wear rate of 10 mg/1000 cycles at PV 0.5 is not the same as 10 mg/1000 cycles at PV 3.0. The second is the counterface material and surface finish. A roughness of Ra 0.2 µm produces different wear than Ra 1.6 µm. The third is the lubrication condition. Dry running, water-lubricated, and oil-lubricated conditions produce different wear rates. The fourth is the test duration. A short test may not capture the running-in period. In our factory, every batch of Modified PTFE Sheets is tested at three PV levels with a documented counterface and lubrication condition. We provide the full test report with the material certificate. Taifno can also perform application-specific wear tests on request.

4. When Do Modified PTFE Sheets Not Solve the Wear Problem?

Modified grades are not universal. There are three situations where they do not solve the wear problem. The first is high temperature above the filler's tolerance. Glass fiber-filled PTFE is rated to 260°C, but the filler can accelerate degradation at the upper limit. Bronze-filled PTFE is limited to 200°C in oxidizing environments. The second is a very rough counterface. A roughness above Ra 1.6 µm can cause the filler particles to abrade the counterface and create a wear spiral. The third is strong chemical attack. Some fillers, such as bronze and glass, are not resistant to hydrofluoric acid or strong alkalis. In these cases, a different material or a different filler system is required. In our factory, we evaluate the application conditions before recommending a grade. We do not recommend a Modified PTFE Sheets when the conditions fall outside the material's limits.

5. How Should Modified PTFE Sheets Be Matched to a Specific Application?

The matching process follows four steps. First, determine the PV level. Calculate the pressure and the sliding velocity at the sealing interface. Second, determine the temperature range. Check the filler's thermal limits. Third, determine the chemical environment. Check the filler's chemical resistance. Fourth, determine the counterface. Check the counterface hardness and surface finish. The table below shows the recommended grade for common applications.

Application PV level (MPa·m/s) Recommended filler system Reason
Hydraulic cylinder seal 1.5 – 2.5 Bronze + graphite High load, good thermal stability
Pneumatic valve seat 0.5 – 1.0 Graphite + MoS₂ Low friction, dry running
Chemical pump bearing 0.5 – 1.5 Carbon fiber + graphite Chemical resistance, low wear
High-speed shaft seal 2.0 – 3.5 Carbon fiber + glass fiber Thermal conductivity, load capacity

In our factory, we work with the customer to define the PV level and the environment before selecting the grade. We provide a material data sheet and a wear test report for the recommended grade. Ningbo Taifno PTFE Plastic Products Co., Ltd. also provides sample sheets for on-site testing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Modified PTFE Sheets and Wear Resistance

Question 1: Does higher filler content always mean better wear resistance?
Answer: No. Higher filler content does not always improve wear resistance. There is an optimal range for each filler system. For glass fiber, the optimal range is 15 to 25 percent. Above 30 percent, the material becomes brittle, and the filler particles can agglomerate, which creates stress concentrations and accelerates wear. For bronze, the optimal range is 40 to 60 percent. Above 60 percent, the material loses the beneficial properties of PTFE, and the friction coefficient increases. In our factory, we test wear rate at three filler levels before recommending a grade. We provide the test data so that the customer can see the optimum for their application.
Question 2: Can Modified PTFE Sheets replace virgin PTFE without changing the seal design?
Answer: In many cases, yes, but the design should be reviewed. The modified grade has a higher friction coefficient and lower elongation than virgin PTFE. The seal geometry may need to be adjusted to compensate for the higher friction and the reduced ability to conform to the counterface. The groove dimensions may also need to be adjusted because the modified grade has a lower thermal expansion coefficient, which changes the clearance at operating temperature. In our factory, we recommend a design review before switching from virgin PTFE to a Modified PTFE Sheets grade. We can provide the material properties and the recommended design changes. For critical seals, we recommend a prototype test before production.
Question 3: How does counterface roughness affect the wear of Modified PTFE Sheets?
Answer: Counterface roughness has a significant effect on the wear of Modified PTFE Sheets. A very smooth counterface, below Ra 0.1 µm, can cause the transfer film to become too thin, which increases the direct contact between the PTFE and the counterface and accelerates wear. A very rough counterface, above Ra 1.6 µm, can cause the filler particles to abrade the counterface and create a wear spiral. The optimal roughness for filled PTFE is Ra 0.2 to 0.6 µm. In our factory, we recommend that the counterface be machined to this range and that it be hardened if the application involves high PV. We provide a counterface preparation guide with every Modified PTFE Sheets order.

Summary for Seal Designers and Maintenance Engineers

Modified PTFE Sheets and virgin PTFE differ in wear resistance because of the filler system. Virgin PTFE has a low friction coefficient but a high wear rate under load. Modified grades use glass fiber, carbon fiber, bronze, graphite, or molybdenum disulfide to change the wear mechanism. The wear rate of a modified grade can be six to ten times lower than virgin PTFE at high PV. The selection depends on the PV level, the temperature, the chemical environment, and the counterface. Wear data must be verified with the test conditions. In our factory, we test every batch and provide full wear rate data with the material certificate.
