A field engineer installs a Worm Gearbox on a conveyor drive. The drawing shows a horizontal mounting position. The actual installation is tilted 15 degrees because the conveyor frame is not level. The engineer does not adjust the oil level. Three months later, the gearbox is leaking oil from the output shaft seal. The engineer inspects the unit and finds that the oil level is above the seal lip when the gearbox is tilted. The oil has been forced past the seal by the rotating shaft. The engineer also notices that the upper bearing is running dry because the oil has pooled at the lower end of the housing. This is not a manufacturing defect. It is an installation error caused by the mounting position. This guide explains why mounting position is critical for worm gearbox reliability.
The oil level in a Worm Gearbox is set by the position of the oil level plug. The plug is located on the housing at a specific height to maintain the correct oil level for the design mounting position. If the gearbox is mounted in a different position, the oil level relative to the internal components changes. In a horizontal mounting position, the oil level is at the centerline of the lowest bearing. In a vertical mounting position, the oil level is higher on one side and lower on the other. The table below shows the effect of mounting angle on oil level at the bearings.
| Mounting angle | Oil level at upper bearing | Oil level at lower bearing | Seal exposure |
| Horizontal (0°) | Correct | Correct | Normal |
| 15° tilt | Below minimum (dry) | Above maximum | Seal submerged |
| 30° tilt | Dry | Overfilled | Seal submerged |
| Vertical (90°) | Dry (requires special oil fill) | Overfilled | Seal submerged |
In our factory, we manufacture Worm Gearbox units that are designed for specific mounting positions. The oil level plug and the drain plug are positioned for the design orientation. If the customer needs a different mounting position, we can provide a gearbox with the plugs relocated. Saifu Vietnam Company Limited has been manufacturing worm gearboxes for over 15 years and provides mounting position guidelines for all of our products.
The bearings in a Worm Gearbox are lubricated by splash oil or by an oil pump. In a horizontal mounting position, the oil splashes evenly across the bearings. In a tilted or vertical position, the oil may not reach the upper bearings. The upper bearings run dry, which causes overheating and premature failure. The table below shows the lubrication condition for different mounting positions.
| Mounting position | Lower bearing lubrication | Upper bearing lubrication | Recommended action |
| Horizontal | Excellent (splash) | Excellent (splash) | Standard oil level |
| Horizontal, high speed | Excellent | Good (oil mist) | Use oil pump for upper bearing |
| 15° tilt | Over-lubricated | Marginal | Relocate oil plug; adjust level |
| 30° tilt | Over-lubricated | Poor (dry) | Use forced lubrication or oil pump |
| Vertical | Over-lubricated | Dry | Special design with oil pump |
Field engineer's note: In a vertical mounting position, the upper bearing is often above the oil level. The bearing must be lubricated by an oil pump or by a grease nipple. If the gearbox is not designed for vertical mounting, the upper bearing will fail within 1,000 to 2,000 hours. In our factory, we offer a vertical mounting kit that includes an oil pump and the necessary piping. We also recommend that the customer specify the mounting position when ordering the gearbox.
The heat generated by the Worm Gearbox is dissipated through the housing surface. The mounting position affects the surface area that is exposed to the air and the convection efficiency. In a horizontal position, the top surface of the housing is exposed, and the heat rises away from the gearbox. In a vertical position, the surface area is similar, but the airflow pattern is different. The table below shows the heat dissipation for different mounting positions.
| Mounting position | Exposed surface area | Convection efficiency | Typical temperature rise |
| Horizontal | 100% | High (hot air rises) | 35 – 45°C |
| Horizontal with fan | 100% | Very high | 25 – 35°C |
| Vertical | 95% | Moderate | 40 – 50°C |
| Vertical with fan | 95% | High | 30 – 40°C |
| Inclined (30°) | 90% | Moderate | 40 – 50°C |
In our factory, we test the temperature rise of our Worm Gearbox units in different mounting positions. The temperature rise is 5 to 10°C higher in a vertical position than in a horizontal position. This reduces the thermal power rating of the gearbox by 10 to 15 percent. If the gearbox is operated near its thermal limit, the mounting position must be considered. Saifu provides thermal power ratings for each mounting position.
The mounting position must be verified before the gearbox is filled with oil and put into service. The verification process includes four steps. The first is to check the orientation of the gearbox against the installation drawing. The second is to check the position of the oil level plug and the drain plug. The third is to fill the gearbox with the correct amount of oil for the mounting position. The fourth is to check for leaks after the first hour of operation. The table below shows the verification checklist.
| Verification step | Acceptance criteria | Method |
| Mounting angle | Within 2° of design | Digital inclinometer |
| Oil level plug position | At the highest point for the design orientation | Visual inspection |
| Oil fill amount | Per the mounting position table | Measuring cup or flow meter |
| Leak check | No visible leakage after 1 hour | Visual inspection |
| Bearing temperature | Below 80°C after 1 hour | Infrared thermometer |
In our factory, we provide a mounting position verification sheet with every Worm Gearbox. The sheet lists the correct oil fill amount for horizontal, vertical, and inclined positions. We also provide a digital inclinometer for field use. Saifu Vietnam Company Limited recommends that the installation be inspected by a qualified engineer before the gearbox is put into continuous service.
The mounting position of a Worm Gearbox affects the oil level, the bearing lubrication, and the heat dissipation. A horizontal mounting position is the standard. Vertical and inclined positions require modifications to the oil level plug, the drain plug, and the lubrication system. The oil level must be adjusted for the mounting angle to ensure that the lowest bearing is lubricated and the seal is not submerged. The upper bearing may require an oil pump or grease lubrication in vertical positions. By verifying the mounting position and adjusting the oil level before commissioning, field engineers can prevent premature failure and extend the service life of the gearbox. Saifu Vietnam Company Limited has been manufacturing Worm Gearbox units for over 15 years and provides full mounting position support for our customers.
